Making Nursing Homes more like Home
This article from The Patriot Ledger discusses a growing movement in this country called “culture change”. The focus is to change the way we think about aging, primarily in long-term care facilities. The main purpose is provide services centered more on what the elderly want and also to have more home-like communities.
The Pioneer Network, an umbrella group in Rochester, N.Y., and the Picker Institute in Camden, Maine, are gathering elder advocates in Massachusetts, Georgia and Florida to talk about how elders can have a stronger voice and more choice in services.
This includes respecting the residents’ wishes on schedules for getting up in the morning, having meals, showering, and going to bed at night.
