Gait-Monitoring Wireless Sensors in Development for Elderly

Researchers at the University of Virginia are working toward developing a wireless body sensor network that monitors a nursing home residents’ gait.  This type of technology will allow geriatricians to accurately acess gait problems in seniors so they will be able to provide the necessary interventions before a fall occurs.  This article from Long-Term Living.

Falls are the leading cause of injury death among people age 65 and older, according to research compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They are also the major cause of nonfatal injury and hospitalizations for trauma. By 2020, the annual direct and indirect cost of fall injuries is projected to reach $54.9 billion.
