Active Awareness

Luckily, therapists can modify exercise programs to keep Alzheimer’s and dementia patients as physically and mentally healthy as possible. One of the keys to doing that is tackling comorbidities first.
“A safe exercise program always is considerate of medical comorbidities first,” Conley said. “Then a program may employ an activity that is very familiar and safe, such as walking. Building on an ambulatory exercise program may include investigation of prior level of function and preference of leisure skills such as bowling or golf that may be incorporated into a safe exercise program for each patient.”
Modification can include using the seated position, taking frequent rest breaks and encouraging patients to move in a range of motion that is comfortable. Another option is group exercise, which may facilitate regular participation.
