Gadgets for Growing Old at Home
Here is a very intriguing article from The New York Times that educates us on just how technology can be harnessed to assist seniors to be more independent and secure.
“Our society does not reimburse for prevention,” said David Stern, chief professional officer for Living Independently, which produces a home monitoring system called QuietCare that is used in assisted living communities. “But there’s a recognition now that people need technology and that if you can keep someone living at home, it costs a lot less than having them in a nursing home.”

Interesting article. Technology is increasingly able to keep seniors in their homes, but at what cost? Not only a financial expense, but as the article said, some people may resent the disembodied voice intruding on their lives.
I agree that this technology might be like the treadmills and stationary bikes many of us have, but if someone can stay in their home by using a device that will monitor their wellbeing, then it is worth the time, expense, and intrusion.
I would imagine there is a possibility that the expense of the device is less than the expense of staying in a nursing home. Even if someone needed more than one type of gadget, the expense, safety of the aging senior, and the comfort of staying in their long time home might well be worth it.
It would behoove all concerned family members to keep an eye on the continued development of such items.
