New Laws Would Change Senior Care
The Eerie Times News recently published an article reporting the discussion about specific regulations for assisted-living facilities. Interestingly, the article also focuses on how any decisions would affect senior residents living there, and Eleen Prittie in specific.
From the Eerie Times News article:
Pennsylvania is one of only a handful of states that doesn’t have specific regulations for assisted-living facilities — places designed to care for people who need more help than simply getting bathed and dressed, but don’t need 24-hour nursing care.
State lawmakers passed a bill in 2007 to mandate licensing standards for these facilities, like those for nursing homes. The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare is crafting regulations to enforce the law.
But consumer groups and assisted-living facility operators are battling over what these regulations will say.
Consumer groups worry that the regulations will be too weak and won’t help residents, while operators are concerned the regulations will force them to completely renovate their buildings or stop providing care to people, like Prittie, who meet the criteria for assisted living.

What do you think? Do you agree with the consumer groups and operators that regulations at this moment would not be beneficial for senior residents, or do you believe that it is time to set clear rules?
