While the unannounced provincial inspections are mandatory, the region voluntarily opts for a national accreditation process in which so-called surveyors come in and spend several days at long-term care homes, analyzing every aspect of the home operations and interviewing staff, residents and family members. The region was recently awarded a three-year accreditation, the highest possible.
